Pomegranate, Beetroot & Cinnamon Shots

February 13, 2023

The colour we all need. These Pomegranate, Beetroot and Cinnamon Shots are so pretty and delicious, and even though they don’t contain chocolate, I think they might be perfect for Valentine’s Day.

The ancient Greeks believed that pomegranate juice was the symbol of Love, because their legends proclaimed that the first pomegranate tree was planted by Aphrodite – The Goddess of Love. Shakespeare used the symbolism of a pomegranate tree in Romeo and Juliet to represent true love, forbidden love, and sweet innocence between the two young lovers.

The colours of fruits and vegetables are directly connected with what nutrients they are rich in. Eating (and drinking) plants with lots of colour is an indicator that they are rich in the natural chemicals phytonutrients, that help prevent disease and help keep the body functioning optimally. Red and purple vegetables, such as pomegranate and beetroot contain anthocyanins and lycopene, along with fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Pomegranates are rich in free-radical fighting antioxidants and polyphenolic compounds that offer protection from this damage and help to keep inflammation at bay. Beetroots are packed with essential nutrients, particularly betaine, folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C, which also help improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, and keep methylation humming.

During the cold season, our digestive system weakens. However, we can still benefit from the amazing alkalising and nourishing qualities of juicing towards the end of Winter time.

The best juices for the colder season are those that create a calming and warming effect in the body, such as the more robust fruit and vegetables that reduce sugar crashes, nourish our tissues and ignite our digestive fire, which in turn, strengthens our immunity.

Herbs and spices that add heat, whilst taming inflammation are also our cold weather juicing heroes; think ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, fennel, cardamom and chilli.

The most important thing to remember is to drink your juice at room temperature, preferably in the morning, and don’t forget to “chew” every sip, slowly. This allows for optimal enzyme production and helps your body figure out how many and what type of enzymes it needs to properly digest the juice and reap all of its precious nutrients.

The cinnamon in these immune-supporting shots adds a touch of warmth and natural sweetness and is a powerful anti-inflammatory spice. I recommend you try to source Ceylon cinnamon, which is known as the “true” cinnamon rather than the common Cassia cinnamon, which is less expensive, but lower quality than Ceylon cinnamon.

Thank you for sharing this RachelI. I’d like to make it but I do not have a juicer. Can I.put it in ny rnutribullet and strain it through a cheesecloth? Kameela x

Hi Kameela. Yes, this should work. I would recommend a double cheesecloth layer to minimise bits in your juice 🙂
